Abraham Maslow in 1943 suggested that humans have five levels of needs
Each level must be satisfied before they can progress to the next level. Starting at the bottom of the pyramid then
moving upwards.
3
Q
Maslow’s theory
A
- A person starts at the bottom of the hierarchy and will initially seek to satisfy
basic needs eg food and shelter - The next level which is security and protection
- The next level is social/love and belonging needs where most people want to
belong to a group - Esteem needs are about being given recognition for a job well done
- Self-actualisation is how people realise their potential
- If management can identify which level each employee has reached they can
decide on suitable rewards
