Penicillins Flashcards
What are the three penicillin categories?
- Beta-lactamase sensitive
- Broad spectrum
- Penicillin resistant
What is beta-lactamase?
its an enzyme which is produced by bacteria and provides multi-resistant to beta-lactamase antibiotics
Which penicillins are more sensitive to beta-lactamase?
Phenoxymethylpenicillin
Benzylpenicillin
Name broad spectrum antibiotics.
Amoxicillin and ampicillin
Name a penicillin resistant antibiotic.
Flucloxacillin
Which type of infections are penicillins generally good at fighting against?
Gram-positive and gram negative
are used for all infections
(RTI, pneumonia)
What are the common S/E of penicillins?
Hypersensitivity
anaphylaxis
diarrhoea
Whats the main S/E of flucloxacillin?
Hepatic disease especially in those taking it long-term.
What S/E would you look for if a patient is taking flucloxacillin long term?
Cholestatic Jaundice, hepatitis
What are the main S/E of ampicillin and amoxicilin?
rashes
Which penicillins should be taken on an empty stomach?
Flucloxacillin, ampicillin, phenoxymethylpenicillin
This means 1 hour before food or 2 hours after food.
These three are the only ones taken before food.
