What is the main S/E with gentamicin?

A

ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity
Patient must be aware of any partial hearing loss and vertigo - ototoxicity
OR
if pt is v. dehydrated, nausea vomiting - nephrotoxicity

A

serum concentration
renal concentration
creatinine clearance should be measured before giving the drug

if plasma conc starts going very high, how would you overcome this?

A

Their dose interval would need to be increased. so if someone was given the drug every 4 hours they would need to be given it every 6 hours
so you dont stop giving the drug, you need to increase the interval so the plasma conc starts to go back to the normal level it should be
