Aminoglycosides Flashcards
Which drugs are aminoglycosides?
Gentamicin
Streptomycin
neomycin
Tobramycin
Which AMG is reserved for TB?
streptomycin
What do aminoglycosides do?
they are bactericidal - kills bacteria
Can they be taken orally?
given via injection coz they’re not absorbed in the gut
What is the main S/E with gentamicin?
ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity
Patient must be aware of any partial hearing loss and vertigo - ototoxicity
OR
if pt is v. dehydrated, nausea vomiting - nephrotoxicity
How are AMG excreted?
Renally
Caution in patients with renal impairment
What would you need to measure in patients taking AMG?
serum concentration
renal concentration
creatinine clearance should be measured before giving the drug
if plasma conc starts going very high, how would you overcome this?
Their dose interval would need to be increased. so if someone was given the drug every 4 hours they would need to be given it every 6 hours
so you dont stop giving the drug, you need to increase the interval so the plasma conc starts to go back to the normal level it should be
