Penicillins Flashcards
Name the Penicillins (6)
Amoxicillin (moderate spectrum)
Ampicillin (moderate spectrum)
Benzyl penicillin (narrow spectrum)
Dicloxacillin (narrow spectrum)
Flucloxacillin (narrow spectrum)
Phenoxymethylpenicillin (narrow spectrum)
Penicillins MOA
Interfere with cell wall synthesis by decreasing cross linking of peptidoglycan’s, leading to cell lysis and cell death
Name the Pencillins with beta lactamase inhibitors (2)
Amoxicillin with Clavulanic Acid (broad spectrum)
Piperacillin with Tazobactam (broad spectrum)
Beta Lactamase Inhibitors MOA
Inhibits beta lactamase (which breaks down normal penicillins), this extends the spectrum of the antibiotic
Are Penicillins bactericidal or bacteriostatic?
Bactericidal
Common Adverse Effects
Diarrhoea
Nausea
Immunologic reactions (rash)
Infrequent Adverse Effects
Vomiting
C.diff
Rare Adverse Effects
Electrolyte disturbances
Black tongue
Neurotoxicity
