Q
Examples
A
ampicillin
amoxicillin
2
Q
Mech of Action
A
Bactericidal
interferes with cell wall by interfering with peptoglycan
allows accumulation of enzyme that destroys integrity of cell wall
3
Q
USE
A
bactericidal against pneumococcal, meningococcal, streptococcal
ampicillin has wider range of activity, includes gram - bacilli (H flu, E coli) but has increased incidence of skin rash
4
Q
metabolism/excretion
A
90% renal excretion
amoxicillin better absorbed by GI tract
5
Q
side effects
A
hypersensitivity, most allergenic of all antimicrobials
rash, fever, anaphylactic, hemolytic anemia
