Penicilin Flashcards
How do Penicillin’s work?
Beta-lactam disrupts CELL WALL
targets penicillin binding proteins
Beta lactam ring binds IRREVERSIBLY to PBP
Reduced PBP = weak wall = breakdown
transpeptidases
bacterial enzyme that catalyzes formation of cross bridges between peptidoglycan polymer strands in cell wall
INHIBIT
auytolystins
enzymes that cleaves bonds in cell wall allowing growth
ACTIVATE
Bacterial resistance for penicillins
1) increase barrier protecting PBP
- gram negative
2) Beta-Lactamases
3) PBPs with low affinity to penicillin
