Pelvis osteology Flashcards
functions of the pelvis
weight transfer
withstand compression of other forces
provide attachment for powerful muscles
what makes up bony pelvis
hip bones - ilium, ischium, pubis
sacrum
coccyx
blood vessels of the pelvis
common iliac arteries (internal and external)
branches of anterior division
umbilical artery - branches into superior vesical artery that supplies fundus of urinary bladder
obturator artery - vulnerable in hernia op because it lies posterior to lacunar ligament, supplies medial muscles of thigh
inferior vesicle (in males)
uterine artery - replaces ductus deferens in males, main supply to uterus, enlarges during pregnancy
vaginal artery - replaces inferior vesical artery of male
internal pudendal artery - leaves below piriformis
inferior gluteal artery - supplies pelvic diaphragm, butt, post thigh
branches of posterior division
iliolumbar artery - supplies iliacus, psoas major, quadratus, anastamoses with lumbar arteries
lateral sacral - supplies spinal meninges
superior gluteal arteries - supplies gluteal muscle
ovarian artery
anastamoses with uterine artery in broad ligament
supplies ovary and uterine tube
the superior rectal arteries
at s3 divides into right and left
anastamoses with middle rectal and inferior rectal
ovarian fossa relations
external iliac vessels superiorly
obliterated umbilical anteriorly
ureter and internal iliac vessel posteriorly
obturator nerve and vessels lateral to it
