Pelvis and Thigh Flashcards
Quadriceps Femurs Group Origins
Rectus Femoris: AIIS
Vastus Medialis: Medial lip of linea aspera
Vastus Lateralis: Lateral lip of linea aspera, gluteal tuberosity and greater trochanter
Vastus Intermedius: Anterior and lateral shaft of femur
Quadriceps Femurs Group Insertion
Tibial tuberosity (via the patella and patellar ligament)
Quadriceps Femurs Group Action
All: Extend the knee
Rectus Femoris: Flex hip
Biceps Femoris Origin
Long head: Ischial tuberosity
Short head: Lateral lip of linea aspera
Biceps Femoris Insertion
Head of the fibula
Biceps Femoris Action
Flex the knee
Laterally rotate flexed knee
Tilt the pelvis posteriorly
Long head: Extend the hip, Assist to laterally rotate hip
Semitendinosus Origin
Ischial tuberosity
Semitendinosus Insertion
Proximal, medial shaft of the tibia at per anserinus tendon
Semitendinosus Action
Flex the knee Medially rotate flexed knee Extend hip Medially rotate hip Tilt pelvis posteriorly
Semimembranosus Origin
Ischial tuberosity
Semimembranosus Insertion
Posterior aspect of medial condyle of tibia
Semimembranosus Action
Flex the knee Medially rotate flexed knee Extend hip Medially rotate hip Tilt pelvis posteriorly
Gluteus Maximus Origin
Coccyx, edge of sacrum, posterior iliac crest, sacrotuberous and sacroiliac ligaments
Gluteus Maximus Insertion
Iliotibial tract (upper fibers) and gluteal tuberosity (lower fibers)
Gluteus Maximus Actions
All fibers: Extends the hip Laterally rotates hip Abducts the hip Lower fibers: Adduct the hip
Gluteus Medius Origin
Gluteal surface of ilium, between posterior and anterior gluteal lines, just below iliac crest
Gluteus Medius Insertion
Lateral aspect of greater trochanter
Gluteus Medius Actions
All fibers: Abduct hip
Anterior: Flex hip, medially rotate hip
Posterior: Extend hip, Laterally rotate
Gluteus Minimus Origin
Gluteal surface of the ilium between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Gluteus Minimus Insertion
Anterior aspect of greater trochanter
Gluteus Minimus Actions
Abduct hip, Medially rotate hip, Flex hip
Adductor Magnus Origin
Inferior ramus of the pubis, ramus of ischium and ischial tuberosity
Adductor Magnus Insertion

Adductor Magnus Action
Adduct hip, Medially rotate hip
Flex hip
Posterior fibers: Extend hip
Adductor Longus Origin
