Pelvis and perineum 2 Flashcards
What 4 categories can the male reproductive system be organised into?
External genitalia
The gonads
The tube system
The accessory glands
What are the gonads?
Where gametes/sex cells are produced
Site of male sex hormones
What is the function of the tube system?
For transporting the sperm from the gonads
What is the function of the accessory glands?
Support the sperm and lubricate the copulatory organs
What organs are involved in the male reproductive system?
Testis Vas deferens or Ductus deferens Seminal glands Prostate Epididymis Bulbourethral glands
Where are the gonads located?
Outside the abdominopelvic cavity
What is the name of the canal that the testis pass through during development?
Inguinal canal
What are the deep and superficial openings of the inguinal canal?
Internal/deep ring
External/superficial ring
What is the name of the group of structures that the inguinal canal carries?
The spermatic cord
What does the spermatic cord contain?
Protection- Pampiniform plexus Doesn't- Ductus Deferens Contribute- Cremasteric artery To- Testicular artery A- Artery of ductus deferens Good- Genital branch of genitofemoral nerve Sex- Sympathetic nerve fibres Life- Lymphatic vessels
What shape are the testes?
Ovoid
What are the testes suspended in?
The scrotum
What is the tough outer fibrous layer of the testes called?
Annulus
What are the names of the two layers of tunica vaginalis that surround the testes?
Parietal and visceral laminae
What material is present between the 2 layers of tunica vaginalis that surround the testes?
Serous fluid
What is hydrocele?
Scrotum is swollen due to fluid accumulation in the sheath which surrounds the testicle
What is hydrocele caused by?
Inflammation or injury within the scrotum
What is haematocele?
Collection of blood in the scrotum of males
What is the cause of a haematocele?
Testicular rupture (80% of cases) A tear in the pampiniform plexus veins
Where is the blood supply of the testis from?
Abdominal aorta
What is the name of the arteries that supply the testis?
Testicular arteries
At what vertebral level do the testicular arteries branch from the abdominal aorta?
L2-L3
What structures near the pelvic brim do the testicular arteries cross before going into the inguinal canal?
Genitofemoral nerve
Ureter
What canal do the testicular arteries travel through?
Inguinal canal
What veins are associated with the testis?
Pampiniform venous plexus
What is the Pampiniform venous plexus made up of?
8-12 anastomosing veins
What is the function of the pampinform plexus?
Absorb body heat from the testes and scrotum
Into which vein does the right testicular vein drain?
Inferior vena cava
Which vein does your left testicular vein drain into?
Left renal vein
What is a varicocele?
Enlargement of veins within the scrotum
What is the main cause of varicocele?
Defective valves within the veins
What is testicular torsion?
Blood supply to testis cut off
Which two groups of lymph nodes receive lymph from the testis?
Lateral lumbar nodes
Pre-aortic nodes
Which group of lymph nodes drain the prostate?
Internal iliac nodes
Sacral nodes
Which group of lymph nodes drain the seminal vesicle?
Internal iliac nodes
External iliac nodes
Which group of lymph nodes drain the scrotum?
Superficial inguinal nodes
Which group of lymph nodes drain the penis?
Deep inguinal lymph nodes
Where is the epididymis?
Attached to the body of the testis
What is the function of the epididymis?
Stores sperm that is produced by the testis
What is the vas deferens?
Muscular tube
Arises from the tail of the epididymis
What does the vas deferens terminate to form?
Ejaculatory duct
How does the vas deferens join the pelvis?
By crossing over the external iliac vessels
What are the seminal glands?
Paired structures located on either side of the posterior surface of the bladder
What do the seminal vesicles produce?
Semenogelin
What is produced by the prostate gland?
Prostaglandins
What is another name for the bulbourethral glands?
Cowper’s glands
What are the bulbourethral gland?
Small, paired structures
Where are the bulbourethral glands?
Urogenital diaphragm
What do the bulbourethral glands empty into?
Penile/ spongy urethra
What do the bulbourethral glands produce?
Cowper’s fluid-alkaline mucus like fluid
