Pelvic Content- Urinary Flashcards
Urinary organs
Ureters
Urinary bladder
Urethra
Ureters
25-30 cm long (begins at the renal pelvis and ends at the posterior aspect of the bladder)
Retroperitoneal
Abdominal and pelvic parts
Pelvic parts: begins at common iliac bifurcation and end at the posterior superior angle (bladder)
Relations of the Ureters
Males (Anterior): Vas deferens
Females (Anterior): Uterine Artery
Arteries of the Ureters
Males: Inferior vesical artery
Female: uterine artery
Lymphatic drainage of the ureters
Lateral aortic, common iliac, external iliac, internal iliac
Innervation of the Ureters
Renal, aortic, superior and inferior hypogastric plexus
Afferent (pain) fibers: T11-L2, retrograde fibers; Ureteric pain: groin
Bladder
Composed of the detrusor muscle
Detrusor fibers: forms the internal sphincter (main sphincter of urinary control)
Surrounded by the vesical fascia (protects from mechanical damage or infection)
Parts of the bladder
Apex
Fundus
Body
Trigone
Neck
Surfaces of the Bladder
Superior: in close contact with the abdominal contents
Inferolateral
Posterior: in close contact with the rectum in male and in close contact with uterus in females
Bladder pouches
Rectovesical (males): area between the posterior surface of the bladder and the anterior surface of the bladder
Vesicouterine pouch (female): area between the anterior surface of the uterus and the posterior surface of the bladder
Rectouterine pouch (females): are between the posterior surface of the uterus and the anterior surface of the rectum
Retropubic space
Female: pubovesical ligament (keeps the urinary bladder in anatomical position)
Male: puboprostatic ligaments (keeps the urinary bladder in anatomical position)
Trigone of the bladder
Delineated by both opening of the ureter and the outlet of the urethra.
Tissue in the trigone is different than the rest of the bladder
Arterial supply of the bladder
Superior vesical artery
Inferior vesical artery (male)
Vaginal artery (female)
Obturator artery
Veins of the Bladder
Vesical venous plexus
Prostatic venous plexus
Lymphatics of the bladder
External iliac lymph nodes (superior)
Internal iliac lymph nodes (fundus)
Innervation of the bladder
Vesical nerve plexus
Parasympathetic: Pelvic splanchnic nerves; Motor detrusor; relaxes the internal sphincter
Sympathetic (T11-L2)
Male Urethra Parts
Pre-prostatic (bladder neck)
Prostatic
Membranous
Spongy
Prostatic urethra
Widest and dilatable
Presents a urethral crest
Prostatic sinus (open up into the prostatic ducts; runs parallel through the urethral crest)
Seminal colliculus (verumontanum)
Prostatic utricle (atrophic in males and have no function; in females are the uterovaginal canal uterus and part of the vagina)
Ejaculatory ducts
Drains in the prostatic urethra and are located at the anterior utricle
Arterial supply of Male Urethra
Inferior Vesical Artery
Middle rectal artery
Venous supply of male urethra
Inferior vesical vein
Middle rectal vein
Lymphatic drainage of Male Urethra
Internal iliac lymph nodes
Nerves of the Male Urethra
Pudendal and prostatic plexus
Female Urethra
NO INTERNAL SPHINCTER (too short)
Paraurethral glands (prostate equivalent); lubricates distal porition of urethra
Arterial Supply of Female Urethra
Internal pudendal and vaginal artery
Veins of the Female Urethra
Internal Pudendal and vaginal veins
Lymphatic drainage of the Female Urethra
Internal iliac lymph nodes
