Pelvic Content- Female Flashcards
Vagina
From the cervix to the vestibule of vagina
The function of the Vagina
- Excretory duct for menstrual fluid
- Inferior part of the birth cancal
- Sexual interocourse
Vaginal Fornix
- The recess around the cervix
- Anterior, posterior, and lateral parts
- Posterior part (deepest): rectouterine pouch
Relations of the Vagina
- Anterior: posterolateral surface of the bladder and proximal urethra
- Posterior: anal canal, mid-portion of rectum, rectouterine pouch
- Lateral: levator ani, pelvic visceralfascia, and ireters
Muscles that compress the vagina (sphincter)
- Pubovaginalis muscle
- External urtrhal sphincter
- Urethrovaginal sphincter
- Bulbosponginosus muscle
Arterial Supply of Vagina
- Superior portion: Uterine artery
- Middle and inferior part of the vagina: Vaginal arteries from the middle rectal and internal pudendal arteries
Veins of the vagina
- Vaginal venous plexus to
- Uterovaginal venous plexus to
- Uterine veins to
- Internal iliac vein
Lymphatic drainage of the vagina
- Superior: internal and external iliac lymph node
- Middle: internal iliac
- Inferior: sacral, common iliac, and superficial inguinal lymph nodes
Nerves of the Vagina
- Uterovaginal plexus from the inferior hypogastric plexus
- Have both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves
Sympathetic portion
- Lower thoracoespinal cord to lumbar splanchnic nerves and hypogastric plexus
Parasympathetic
- S2-S4 to pelvic splanchinic nerve to hypogastric plexus
Lower 1/5th of the vagina is somatic: from deep perineal branch of the pudendal nerve S2-S2 (Patient can feel pain)
Parts of the Uterus
- Body: Fundus and Isthmus
- Cervix
Wall of uterus
Perimetrium - External (covers the serosa of the uterus
Myometrium - Thickest and a muscular portion of the uterus
Endometrium - Functional part of the uterus, responsible for the menstrual contents in females
Surfaces of the body of uterus
- Vesical
- Intestinal
Uterine horns
Entrances of the uterine (fallopian) tubes
Ligaments of the Uterus
Proper ovarian ligament (posteroinferior)
Round ligament (anterinferior)
Broad ligament (mesometrium) contents: largest
- Double layer of peritoneum
- Suspensory ligament of ovary
- Mesovarium, Mesosalpinx
- Transverse cervical (cardinal) ligament: ligament at the level of the cervix
- Utererosscral ligament: runs from the posterior surface of the uterus close to the sacrum
Cervix Part
- Suprvaginal part (rectouterine pouch)
- Vaginal part
- Internal os
- Cervical canal: presents an internal and external os
- External os
Relations of the Uterus
Anterior: Vesicouterine p0uch, superior surface of the bladder
Posterior: rectouterine pouch, anterior to the rectumm
Lateral: broad ligament, transverse cervical (cardinal ligament); ureters (2cm)
Arterial Supply of the uterus
Uterine and Ovarian arteries
Branches: large superior (body and fundus of the uterus); vaginal (cervix and vagina)
Veins of the Uterus
Uterine venous plexus (with the broad ligament)
Drains in to internal iliac vein
Lymphatic Drainage of the Uterus
Fundus: Lumbar lymph nodes, external iliac lymph nodes
Body: external iliac lymph nodes
Cervix: Internal iliac and sacral lymph nodes
Nerves of the Uterus
Uterovaginal plexus from the inferior hypogastric plexus
Sympathetic
- Lower thoracospinal cord to lumbar splanchnic nerves and hypogastric plexus
Parasympathetic
- S2-S4 to pelvic splanchinc nerve to hypogastric plexus
Uterine Tubes
Tubal structure that runs from the lateral pole of the ovary into the peritoneal cavity
Parts of the Uterine (Fallopian) Tubes
Infundibulum (distal): opens to the abdominal cavity and presents digit like structures (fimbriae)
Ampulla: *oocytes fertilization
Isthmus: uterine horn; segment close to the uterine body
Uterine Part: intramural (runs within the myometrium); uterine ostium
Ligaments of the Uterine Tubes
Mesosalpinx
Arterial Supply of the Uterine Tube
Uterine and ovarian artery
