Q

adnexa

A

things surrounding the eye

  • lids & lashes
  • conjunctiva (thin membrane?)
  • lacrimal apparatus (production + drainage of tears)
  • extraocular muscles (control eye movement)

Q

visual pathway

A

from eye to brain

  • light hits retina in eye - signal goes down optic nerve through complex pathway until reaches visual cortex at back of head

Q

relevance?

A

detect eye injury, diseases + abnormality

  • routine eye examination - anterior segment (ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp); posterior segment (ophthalmoscopy); extraocular muscles (motility) - deficiency may indicate problem w nerves supplying that muscle; pupil reactions (PERRLA, RAPD); visual pathway (perimetry - visual field testing)
