PEG the visual system Flashcards
1
Q
gross structure of visual system
A
- eyeball
- adnexa
- visual pathway
2
Q
eyeball
A
- layers
- media
- segments
- poles
- axes
3
Q
adnexa
A
things surrounding the eye
- lids & lashes
- conjunctiva (thin membrane?)
- lacrimal apparatus (production + drainage of tears)
- extraocular muscles (control eye movement)
4
Q
visual pathway
A
from eye to brain
- light hits retina in eye - signal goes down optic nerve through complex pathway until reaches visual cortex at back of head
5
Q
relevance?
A
detect eye injury, diseases + abnormality
- routine eye examination - anterior segment (ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp); posterior segment (ophthalmoscopy); extraocular muscles (motility) - deficiency may indicate problem w nerves supplying that muscle; pupil reactions (PERRLA, RAPD); visual pathway (perimetry - visual field testing)
6
Q
anterior segment
A
- lids
- lashes
- conjunctiva
- iris
- anterior chamber
7
Q
posterior segment
A
- crystalline lens
- vitreous
- optic disc
- retinal blood vessels
- fundus
- macula
8
Q
anatomical terminology
A
- superior: above / towards the top
- inferior: below / towards the bottom
- lateral/temporal: away from midline of body
- medial/nasal: towards midline of body
- anterior: in front of / towards front
- posterior: behind / towards back
9
Q
eyeball layers
outer layer
A
- outer fibrous layer
