purpose?
A
- intraocular examination of ocular media + fundus
- can also observe anterior segment (lids + lashes)
- revolutionised eye examinations by allowing observation of the ocular fundus and replacing the diagnosis of amaurosis (an outwardly healthy eye with poor vision) with a multitude of others for which an aetiology and treatment could be sought

why?
A
- fundus assessment is legally required for a primary eyecare examination
- to screen for internal eye diseases
e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, maculopathy - to screen for systemic diseases
e.g. diabetes, hypertension

- handheld instrument
- easily portable (adv)
- illuminates the retina (where examiner would get in the way of incident light)
