purpose?

A
  • intraocular examination of ocular media + fundus
  • can also observe anterior segment (lids + lashes)
  • revolutionised eye examinations by allowing observation of the ocular fundus and replacing the diagnosis of amaurosis (an outwardly healthy eye with poor vision) with a multitude of others for which an aetiology and treatment could be sought

A
  • fundus assessment is legally required for a primary eyecare examination
  • to screen for internal eye diseases
    e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, maculopathy
  • to screen for systemic diseases
    e.g. diabetes, hypertension
