What is Peer Support?
A system of giving and receiving help founded on the key principles of respect, shared RESPONSIBILITY and mutual agreement of what is helpful.
Peer support includes…1
*Relationships that are respectful, trusting, and hopeful
*Offering help when needed and encouraging the peer to explore and take risks
*Letting an individual be an expert on him/herself
Peer support includes…
*Promotion of self-determination and self-confidence
*being eager to listen and telling parts of one’s own story when appropriate
*an opportunity to offer information/education
*A relationship where the power differential is minimal
Peer support is NOT…
*Focused on diagnoses, disabilities, and deficits.
*Case-management or other clinical service.
*Doing for others what they can do for themselves.
*The same as social friendship.
Peer Support is NOT
*The replacement for other services.
*The only tool for recovery.
*An us vs. them mentality
*Tokenism
*A relationship that polices individuals on their specific/differing use of language
