Crisis plans are crucial to getting through the crisis with minimal “damage” and a readiness to resume efforts towards meeting plan goals.
Goals of a Crisis Intervention
- Assess the risks to safety for both the individual and others.
- Identify available resources and supports
- Formulate strategies to effectively stabilize the crisis situation
- The overall goal is to restore the person to a level of stability.
- An ideal goal is following the intervention, for the person to use the crisis as an opportunity to learn what they can do to prevent future crises.
Basic Crisis Intervention Skills
Ensuring safety – minimize the physical and psychological danger to self and others.
Providing support – communicating to the individual served that they are cared about and there is hope that they will feel better.
Examining alternatives – situational supports, coping skills, and positive and constructive thinking.
Making plans – including immediate supports and providing coping skills the client can use immediately, as well as writing concrete steps for the client to follow and complete on his or her own.
Obtaining commitment to positive action.
Defining the problem by using motivational listening and response skills (e.g. empathy, genuine responses, acceptance, and positive regard).
