What is an Atrial Septal defect
A
defect in formation of interatrial septum resulting in flow backwards from Left atrium to right atrium. This causes fluid overload in RV and increased pulmonary blood flow.

What would you find on a physical exam of ASD?
A
SEM in pulmonary valve, split S2

What investigations would you order and what would you expect to see
A
First ECG: RBBB, RAD. Second ECHO: showing septum defect. If CXR done, you would see cardiomegaly, increased lung markings due to increased flow

What is the mgmt of ASD
A
Usually nothing cause kid is healthy. Sometimes surgical closure. Indications: Pulmonary HTN, paradoxical embolism, cardiomegaly on CXR, dilated RV on echo.
