What are the benefits of assisstive technology?
Reduction of muscle tone or excessive muscle activity Decrease in non-volitional movements Reduce activity limitations in sitting, mobility, use of hands, and speech Increase ability to participate in daily activity Increase independence Increase social interaction
What type of shoe wear is appropriate for peds?
Shoes that are supportive. No soft slipper things.
Is this an appropriate walker for a child?

What is essential for head control and arm/hand function?
Pelvic alignment and erect trunk.
If a flexible deformity…
correct with as little force as necessary
If a fixed deformity…
accommodate and support the deformity
What is an orthosis?
An external device with controlling forces to: Improve body alignment Improve function Immobilize injured area Prevent or improve deformity Protect joint or limb Limit or reduce pain Provide proprioceptive feedback
What are some considerations to selecting an appropriate orthosis?
What neuromusculoskeletal impairment needs correction? Is the impairment flexible (ie can it be corrected manually?) What is the goal or purpose of using an orthosis? What is the least amount of assistance needed from an orthosis? How long will the child need the orthosis?
What items should be included in the letter of medical necessity?
Patient’s history, diagnosis, impairments Equipment requested including accessories Treatment rationale and/or benefit to child for why equipment necessary Other equipment that has been tried and why it failed to meet child’s needs especially if used successfully PT and MD signatures and dates at end of letter
Common issues requring an orthosis
