Pectoral Region and Back Flashcards
Where do the scapula and clavicle articulate?
Acromioclavicular joint
What stabilises the acromioclavicular joint?
Coracoclavicular ligament
How can dislocation of the AC joint occur?
Hard fall on shoulder or outstretched limb in contact sports
How can we tell that the AC joint has been dislocated?
Acromion is more prominent
Where does the clavicle articulate with the trunk?
Sternoclavicular joint
Is dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint common?
No
What is a common patient for clavicle fractures?
Children occurring from a fall on an outstretched hand
Where is the most common site of clavicular fractures?
Middle third due to it being thin and unsupported by ligaments
How does the clavicle appear in fractures?
Medial fragments is elevated by SCM and can be felt under the skin
Shoulder drops and patient will hold the limb with opposite hand due to the weight of the UL
What does paralysis of trapezius result in?
Inability to elevate shoulder and a ‘drooping’ shoulder
What does paralysis of serratus anterior result in?
Winging of scapula
Normal abduction of arm is no longer possible
What do we mean by accessory muscle of inspiration?
Origin and insertion swap to aid in breathing for asthmatics
When is the thoracodorsal nerve vulnerable to injury?
Injury to axilla
Mastectomy
Surgery to axilla incl. removal of lymph nodes
When is the long thoracic nerve vulnerable to injury?
As it passes superficial to muscle on lateral thoracic wall especially when UL is abducted
Mastectomy
