Causes of Peasants Revolt
Black Death- Since many people were dead, there was more work so peasants demanded more pay but they were ignored
Poll Tax- King Richard introduced this tax to help him fight wars in France. It increased from one groat to four groats
Corrupt Church- the Church exploits peasants and makes them pay pardons for sins they have committed. Many priests like John Ball and John Wyclif began preaching this.
Summary
Peasants are led by Wat Tyler and they invade Fobbing, Brentwood, Maidstone, Bishopsgate, the City of London, Mile End and Smithfield. One of the king’s men kills Wat Tyler and King Richard dispels the demands of the peasants that were made earlier in Mile End and he sends the peasants home
Significance of Peasants Revolt
The first time, ordinary people made a stand against the King
Poll Tax was never repeated again
Workers’ wages began to rise
