Why do Christians support peace?
Jesus taught his followers to have peace and showed that being peaceful rather than violent was good.
If we all supported peace highly, there would be a lot less conflict in the world
However, some people may take part in Holy Wars which aren’t peaceful but believe God would approve as the are fighting for their religion
Why do Christians believe we should act justly?
Jesus taught that God doesn’t always punish humans which is just and merciful so we should show mercy to everyone else.
Bible teaches to act justly
Why do Christians support forgiveness?
Jesus taught his followers to forgive, and how forgiving those who have sinned against you, pleases God and makes him forgive you.
How if you did not keep forgiving, God won’t forgive you.
What does it mean that Christians are reconciled with God?
Jesus dying for our sins allowed us to create a close relationship with God and shows that we should reconcile with the people who we are in conflict with and be on good terms
What do Christians believe about peace and violence?
Oppose violence as they believe God has a desire for a peace.
Violence is usually acted upon emotions like anger but Jesus teaches us never to act in these feelings but to forgive.
But other Christians believe God will support them in some instances of violence e.g. punishing a criminal or fighting a war e.t.c
What do Islam believe about peace and violence ?
- Islam is a religion of peace
- Have lesser Jihad which could lead to a Holy War which consists of violence as your defending your religion
- Some believe violence is acceptable in self defence
- Islam teaches that you shouldn’t be violent towards woman, children and the elderly.
- Violence for lesser jihad must be properly sanctioned
What are violent protests?
- Where people use Violence to object laws or issues
- Some Christians believe it is acceptable to be violent towards those sinning against God e.g. abortions
- A small amount of Muslims believe violence is acceptable
Why do people disagree with violent protests?
- Approach peacefully and negotiate verbally rather than physically
- Believe Law should be respected and acting violent does not give a secure society
- Martin Luther King did peaceful protests by sitting in segregated areas as violence would of made the protest less meaningful/successful
What is terrorism doing in modern times?
- 9/11
- Many Believe they are serving Islam through their actions
- Most muslims condemn terrorist violence
- This has caused many people to fear Islam or be discriminate as the have stereotyped most Muslims with being terrorists.
- Terrorism doesn’t follow Christian believe of ‘Love thy neighbour’
- Goes against Islam principle
How is greed a reason for war?
- People want to gain more land or advance their empires e.t.c
- Jesus taught against greed, teaching them to give their possessions to others who needed them more and this will make your rich in heaven.
- Focusing in greed shows your not focusing on God
- Some believe that going to war for greed means they feel they can get something out of it, which can benefit others
How is self-Defense a reason for war?
- May fight people who attacked you previously
- Justify saying you defended yourself
- Jesus taught nit to fight against people “turn the other cheek” and accept the suffering
- In Islam, Muhammad led Muslim soldiers in battles to defend people
- Wars in self defence can be acceptable as your prevent innocent people from being hurt
How is retaliation a reason for war?
- Revenger for a previous attack
- Makes people not go to war knowing the enemy will retaliate
- Jesus taught you should not take revenge
- However, teaches other not to fight against ones country as they will loose lots of soldiers lives in process
What is a ‘Just war’?
A war that is believed to be right or justified
What are the conditions needed to start a just war?
A high authority or government e,t.c must start it and there must be a good reason e.g. self Defense usually
People must want to do the right things
There must be more reason to go to war, than to not do the war.
There must be a good chance if winning
Other options must be tried first - has to be a last resort
What are the conditions to FIGHT a just war?
Fighting must be proportional - You must do more good than harm and cause as little harm as possible
People can fight against soldiers but not against those who aren’t involved e.g. innocent civilians
How can people oppose how to start a just war?
- Not everyone can agree to start a war
- May be many debates on bad reason for going to war
- It is hard to measure someone’s intention
- It is impossible to know exactly if the war will do more good than harm
- It’ll be very hard to say your certain you’ll win
