PE Waiver Final Flashcards
What is tendinitis?
Inflammation/irritation of a tendon
What causes tendinitis?
repetitive, minor impact on the affected area, or more serious injury. Incorrect posture and poor stretching/conditioning increase risk. Overuse.
Where can tendonitis happen? Most commonly?
anywhere a tendon connects a bone to a muscle. Usually at base of the thumb, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, achilles tendon
Symptoms of tendinitis
pain
How to avoid tendinitis?
Gradually build up activity. Use limited force and limited repetitions. Stop if unusual pain occurs
How to treat tendinitis?
avoid activities that aggravate the problem. Rest and ice
What are cramps?
muscle spasms
Causes of cramps
Poor blood circulation, overexertion, insufficient stretching, exercising in heat, muscle fatigue, dehydration, magnesium/potassium deficiency
How to help muscle cramps
massage, stretch, ice, warming, Epsom salt bath
How to reduce risk of cramps
eat foods with vitamins, magnesium, and calcium. Stay hydrated. Stretch
What is a sprain?
stretch/tear of ligament
What is a strain?
injury of a muscle/tendon
What causes sprains and strains?
direct/indirect trauma that knocks a joint out of position, overstretching or rupturing ligaments
Signs of a sprain?
pain, joint can’t move sometimes
Signs of a strain?
pain, muscle spasms, muscle weakness, swelling/inflammation, cramping
Treating strains/sprains?
RICE, for more severe cases call a doctor: surgery, rehab. plan, activity modification
What are fractures?
broken bone
What causes fractures?
force on bone is stronger than the bone
What is a displaced fracture?
bone snaps in two+ parts, the bone is not lined up. many places is called a comminuted fracture.
What is a closed fracture?
bone breaks, but no wound on skin
