Henoch-Schonlein Purpura

A
  • HSP
  • Most common vasculitis in kids
  • Due to IgA immune complex deposition
  • Presentation: palpable purpura on buttocks and legs
  • GI pain and bleeding
  • Hematuria (IgA nephropathy)—involvement of kidney is very high yield
  • Usually occurs following an upper respiratory tract infection—one of the antibodies you generate is IgA
  • IgA deposition drives the vasculitis!
  • Disease is self-limited
  • If severe, treat with steroids

A

Think: Nephrotic-Loss of protein due to flattening of podocytes (disrupting filtration system).

Nephritic: think loss of blood (example-Immune complex deposition)
