Paychology Brain Flashcards
Hindbrain
Oldest and most posterior part of the brain, made up of medulla, pons and cerebellum
Midbrain
Responsible for relaying information between the hindbrain and forebrain; reticular formation
Forebrain
Most sophisticated part of the brain and separates humans from most animals; cerebrum, hypothalamus, thalamus
Medulla
Life sustaining control system: heart, respiration, cough, swallow
Cerebellum
Monitors and regulates motor behaviours
Pons
Regulates sleep and arousal
Reticular formation
Network of nerve pathways that go up the medulla that control arousal (consciousness) by allowing/not allowing sensory signals
Hypothalamus
Monitors pleasurable activities such as thirst and hunger
Thalamus
Involved in sensory perception and regulation of motor behaviours
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain and associated with higher order thinking
Corpus Collosum
Band of nerve fibres that connect the two hemispheres
