What is the Medical Model of Disability also known as?
The Individual Model
Describe what the Medical Model of Disability is
It placed an emphasis on what was wrong / abnormal with the person
Focus on what they can’t do
What are the criticisms of the Medical Model of Disability
- Individualises disability, seen as a tragedy
- Does not account for social barriers
- Doctor is seen as the person who has the tools to “cure patient”
If they cannot cure the patient, the doctor treats the disability
If they cannot treat the disability, the doctor can fill forms in to allow the patient to seek support
Describe what the Social Model of Disability is
It places emphasis on what is wrong with society as opposed to people
Describe the criticisms of the Social Model of Disability
The image of an idyllic society where impairments cause no problems can never exist
