Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs) Flashcards
1
Q
Mannose Receptors (MRs)
A
- MRs recognize extracellular sugars on microorganisms
- MRs are present on macrophages and dendritic cells
- Have been exploited for their use as a delivery method for certain drugs
2
Q
Scavenger Receptors (SRs)
A
- SRs bind negatively-charged patterns such as LPS
- Binding → formation of foam cells
- Too many foam cells → atherosclerosis
- SRs also bind to waste products and apoptotic cells
3
Q
NOD-like Receptors (NLRs)
A
- NLRs are the intracellular receptors of PAMPs and DAMPs
- They form part of the inflammasome
- They are present on DCs, macrophages, and lymphocytes
- Their action → activation of IL-1alpha and IL-1beta
4
Q
Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs)
A
- TLRs recognize bacterial and viral components
- All of the phagocytes and epithelial cells have TLRs
- Different TLRs recognize specific molecules

Q
What 3 functions is TLR signaling needed for?
A
- Production of protective levels of mucus
- Maintenance of tight junctions
- Production of secretory IgA
- Production of AMPs (done by Paneth cells)
