Patrol bases are typically used for?
To avoid detection by eliminating movement.
To hide a unit during a long detailed reconnaissance.
To perform maintenance on weapons, equipment, eat, and rest.
To plan and issue orders.
To reorganize after infiltrating an enemy area.
To establish a base from which to execute several consecutive or concurrent operations.
What is the maximum amount of time a patrol base should be occupied?
24 Hours.
What are the planning considerations when in a patrol base?
Observation posts and communication with observation posts.
Patrol or Platoon fire plan.
Alert Plan.
Withdrawal plan from the patrol base to include withdrawal routes and a rally point, rendezvous point, or alternate patrol base.
A security system that makes sure specific individuals are awake at all times.
Enforcement of camouflage, noise, and light discipline.
The conduct of required activities with minimum movement and noise.
Priority of Work.
What security considerations should be taken when choosing the location ?
Select terrain the enemy would consider of little tactical value.
Select terrain off main lines of drift.
Select difficult terrain impeding foot movement, such as an area of dense vegetation.
Select terrain near a source of water.
Select terrain defendable for a short period and offers good cover and concealment.
Avoid known or suspected enemy positions.
Avoid built up areas.
Avoid ridges and hilltops, except as needed for maintaining communications.
Avoid small valleys.
Avoid roads and trails.
How will a platoon typically enter a patrol base?
At a 90* turn with a two soldier observation post at the turn. The patrol covers their tracks from the turn to their patrol base.
What perimeter shape will a platoon sized element typically take when entering a patrol base?
Triangle Shaped
What perimeter shape will a squad sized element typically take when entering a patrol base?
Cigar Shaped
What will each squad send to the command post and what are they for?
Squads will send two soldiers as a R&S team. The patrol leader will then give them a contingency plan, reconnaissance method, and guidance on what to look for.
What will R&S teams do and what does the rest of the platoon do in the interim?
R&S teams will prepare a sketch of the area in front of their squad.
Patrol remains on 100% alert during this time.
R&S teams return their information to the patrol leader who then decides to either stay and start priorities of work or to move the patrol.
What must priorities of work consist of?
A task.
A given time.
A measurable performance standard.
If it will be in a centralized or decentralized manner.
What are some of the priorities of work?
Continuous Security Withdraw Plan Continuous Communication Mission preparation and Planning Weapons and Equipment Maintenance Water Resupply Mess Plan Rest and Sleep Management Plan Alert Plan and "Stand To" Resupply Situation and Personal Hygiene
What is the minimum uninterrupted amount of sleep a soldier is required to have?
What if that sleep is interrupted?
Four Hours.
