What is culture?
Beliefs and behaviours shown by a group
What are ethnocentrism and cultural relativism?
Own cultural ways of doing things are right. Other ways are inferior, unnatural or barbaric.
Cultural relativism- different ways but equally valid
What are world views?
People’s assumptions about the nature of reality, understand how people interpret events consistent with their own beliefs.
What are emic and etic perspectives?
Emic- within the culture, patient views and beliefs are from their culture.
Etic- view from the observer, culturally neutral, a dr
What issues may present with a non english patient?
Communication, language issues, idioms, names and interpreters
What are the roles of men and women in different cultures?
Sex roles, gender preferences, female purity, family and work.
Where might there be different beliefs about healthcare?
Pain- expression of pain, may not ask for relief
Religion and spirituality- religious practices and spiritual beliefs- rules on giving or taking blood.
Birth- foods to be eaten at the time of birth, labour and delivery, postpartum- is father there at the birth?
End of life- dying at home or in a hospice
Death- practices- quick burial in Islam
