Aura
bright light, smell or taste, frequently reported before experiencing a seizure
FDA
Food and Drug Administration: federal agency responsible for the enforcement of federal regulations regarding foods, drugs and cosmetics
Immunization
injection of a small amount of weakened or dead organism of modified toxins from an organism into the body
Pathogen
Any microorganism capable of producing disease
Poison
Any substance that impairs health or destroys life when ingested, inhaled or absorbed by the human body
Pollutant
A harmful chemical or waste material discharged into the water, soil or air
Restraint
Any manual method, physical or mechanical device, material or equipment that immobilizes or reduces the ability of a patient to move his or her arms, legs, body or head freely.
Seizure
A hyperexcitation and disorderly discharge of neurons in the brain leading to sudden, violent, involuntary series of muscle contractions.
Seizure precautions
All nursing interventions to protect the patient from traumatic injury, position for adequate ventilation and drainage of oral secretions, and provide privacy and support following a seizure
Status epilepticus
State of a patient prone to seizures, indicated by prolonged or repeated seizures.
