Semi-Fowler
15-45 degrees (usually 30) used to prevent aspiration of external feedings and lung expansion
Fowler’s
45-60 degrees used during procedures such as nasogastric tubing and suctioning while allowing for better chest expansion
High Fowler’s
60-90 degrees used to promote lung expansion and prevents aspiration during meals
Supine
facing upward laying on your back, head and shoulders elevated on a pillow
Trendelenburg
entire bed is tilted with the head of the bed lower than the foot of the bed. used for postural drainage and venous return
Reverse Trendelenburg
entire bed is tilted with foot of bed lower than head of bed. used for gastric emptying and prevents esophageal reflux
Lateral/ Side Lying
patient lies on their side w/ most weight on the dependent hip and shoulder. good sleeping position but patient needs to be turned regularly to prevent pressure ulcers
Sim’s
on their side halfay between lateral and prone. this is a good sleeping position
Prone
lies flat on abdomen, promotes drainage from the mouth after oral surgery, used for short term only. helps prevent hip flexion contractures for lower extremity amputation
