Active: the patient performs the ROM by his/herself
Passive: the nurse/PT assists or does ROM for the patient
What are the nursing interventions related to heat and cold therapy?
Apply to area, make sure call light is in reach and instruct patients to report discomfort
Assess the site every 5-10 minutes to check for redness/pallor, pain/burning, numbness, shivering (w/cold applications), blisters, decreased sensation, mottling of the skin, cyanosis (w/ cold application)
What should you do if the patient experiences any adverse effects to the heat/cold therapy?
Discontinue the treatment, or wait until treatment time is up to stop it
What should you document while giving patient heat/cold therapy?
Location
Type and length of application
Condition of skin before, during and after application
Patients tolerance of the application
