6 Basic Principles of a Patient Interview
1) Help patient begin talking
2) Establish rapport
3) Establish physical comfort and eye contact
4) Ask open ended questions
5) Respond to what the patient says
6) Restate opening remarks (summarize)
What is reflection?
Bringing to the surface and bringing into words the patient’s attitude’s and feelings
What is interpretation?
Understanding a patient from their frame of reference, as opposed to responding based on your own personal frame of reference
What is facilitation?
Encouraging patients to say more
When you summarize to the patient what two things should you discuss?
- Purpose of evaluation and treatment plan
- Discussing the ‘what next’
What if the patient has multiple chief complaints?
Ask, “What is the most important issue you would like to focus treatment on?”
What if the patient repeatedly deviates from topic at hand?
Gently redirect: “I would love to hear more about that, perhaps next time. We need to really focus on the task at hand to help you the most!”

- The interviewer either includes it or does not.
What types of things are included in the CC section?
Reason for Visit, functional staus, pt goals, History of CC, Location/Behavior of symptoms, Previous Exams
What types of things are included in the Obtain Psychosocial Persepctive section?
- Patient’s perception of chief complaint
- Family, social, personal circumstances
- Environmental barriers/accomodations
