What is communication?
use of words, writing, or other commonly understood symbols to send a message to a receiver. The receiver then provides feedback that indicates an interpretation of the message
Feedback
shows that the receiver ensures that the intended message was received
Interference
can interfere with communications and the receiver understanding the intended message, can be internal thoughts of external distractions
labeling
a preconceived notion or thought of a person that may or may not be true
Empathy
understanding and appreciating the patients experiences
sympathy
sharing the pts feelings or emotional state in relation to the illness.
Active listening
defined as hearing the words that your pt is saying as well as paying attention to the significance of those words to the pt.
Watching facial expressions, body language, cultural cues, and assessing the pts mental status
eye contact
maintain good eye contact with your pt and try to stay at the same eye level with them. shows interest in the person
Positioning near the pt.
avoid towering over the pt. the pt is less likely to feel secure enough to provide information because you are viewed in an authoritarian role
public distance
> 12 ft
Social Distance
4-12 feet
personal space
1.5 to 4 feet
Communication will fail if one of these exist…
- Prejudice - (prejudge)
• Lack of Empathy - (empathy is trying to “appreciate” what someone is going through)
• Lack of Respect - (using titles, avoiding eye contact, not listening, etc.)
• Lack of Privacy - (best private place is the back of the ambulance), (never assume if it is ok if other family members are present during the patient interview).
• External Distracters - (radios, equipment, pets)
• Internal Distracters - (previous calls, stresses)
