What is a Physical Therapist?
A healthcare professional who helps patients/ clients mainstain, restore and improve movement, activity and functioning
Types of Care
Primary Care: acute care, rehab hospital (front line)
Secondary Care: referred to PT by a doctor/ physician
Tertiary Care: Specialty care (oncology)

Describe the role of Evidence - Based practice in the PT profession
1) measure the quality and effectiveness of services
2) demonstrate professional values
3) collaborate with other healthcare team members
4) use person-cenered focus to produce better outcome
(making, dinner, can be, useful)
Describe and episode of care in PT
A period of time which a problem or condition is diagnosed, treated and managed. Can be continuous or segmented.
Chronic = 1 year
Acute = begins when first examined and ends when condition in treated
Reclassification can occur when a condition not related to the current condition occurs (new episode occurs)
Visit - all therapy services within a 24 hour period
What are the criteria for the termination of PT services?
Discontinuation - patient stops coming, inability to progress towards goal, therapist feels patient will no longer benefit form therapy
Discharge - goals have been achieved or partially achieved
Transfer - patient moves to another location
What are the components of the examination?
History - data gathering related to why consumer is seeking services
Systems review - brief or limited systems examination
(musculoskeletal, C/P, integ, neuromuscular, cognition)
Tests and measures - general diagnostic hypotheses
What are the components of the evaluation?
Diagnosis - use labels that reflect limitation of functional system level and level of person
Prognosis - predicted optimal level of improvement and the time needed to reach that goal
PoC - identifies anticipated goals and expected outcomes done in consultation with the patient
