What is a person with Disability?
Defined as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
- Civil Rights Laws prohibit discrimination in the work place based on disablement.
- NOT to be confused with impairment (which are alterations in anatomical, physiological, or psychological structures as a consequence of a disease).
According to Nagi, what is Disablement?
“Various impacts of chronic and acute conditions on the functioning of specific body systems, basic human performance, and on peoples functioning in necessary, usual, expected and personably desirable ways in society” - Nagi
What is the purpose of the Disablement Model?
The disablement model is used to delineate the consequences of disease and injury both at the level of the persona and at the level of society. It also provides the conceptual basis for all patient/ client management that are provided by the PT.
