Pathology: uterus, endometrium, cervix, ovary Flashcards
What is the transformation zone?
Squamo-columnar junction between ectocervical (squamous) and endocervical (columnar) epithelia
What is the pathology here?
Chocolate cyst on ovary - suspiscious of endometriosis
What are Brenner tumours?
Ovarian tumours derived from transitional epithelium
What histological subtypes of eptihelail ovarian tumours are there?
Serous

Endometrioid*
Clear cell
Brenner
Undifferentiated carcinoma
How are epithelial ovarian tumours subdivided on histopathological examination?
Divided into benign, borderline or malignant
How are malignant serous ovarian carcinomas classified?
Low or high grade
What are the features that would classfiy an ovarian tumour as benign?
No cytological abnormalities
Proliferative activity absent or scant (mitotic figures)
No stromal invasion
What features of an ovarian tumour would classify it as borderline?
Cytological abnormalities
Proliferative
No stromal invasion
What features of an ovarian tumour would classify it as malignant?
Stromal invasion
What is the precursor lesion to high grade serous carcinoma?
Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) (essentially tubal in origin)
What is the precursor lesion to low grade serous carcinoma?
Serous borderline tumour
What mutation is associated with high grade serous carcinoma?
p53
What gynaecological cancers are associated with Lynch syndrome?
Ovarian cancer - endometrioid or clear cell
Endometrial cancer - endometrioid or mucinous
What is this?
Ovarian cyst
What is the most common germ cell tumour?
Teratoma
