Pathology Images Flashcards
Sx: 59 y.o Japanese presents with recent weight loss, epigastric discomfort afer meals, and occasional nausea
Diffuse Stomach Cancer
- Notice the signet ring cells
- Infiltrates the stomach wall with mass composed of glandular cuboidal and columnar cells
Cavernous hemangioma
- most common benign liver tumor
- typically presents in adults 30-50 years old
- tumors consist of cavernous, blood-filled spaces lined by single epithelial layer
- Most patient are assymptomatic but may experience RUQ fullness
Tx: Surgical ressection (Excellent prognosis)
Peripheral Smear of Patient with Glucose 6 Dehydrogenase Deficiency
- RBCs contain Heinz bodies (intracellular inclusions with denatured Hb)
- May contain Bite cells due to splenic macrophages removing Heinz bodies
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (of Esophagus)
- presents with progressive dysphagia as tumor gradually obstructs lumen
- Risk factors: smoking and chronic alcohol use
- KERATIN PEARLS AND INTERCELLULAR BRIDGES
Reflux Esophagitis
- Commonly occurs during GERD
Note: Elongation of papillae, basal cell hypertrophy, and intraepithelial eosinophils
- Repeated epithelial injury can lead to intestinal metaplasia (Barrett’s esophagus) - where spamous epithellum is transformed to columnar epithelium
Leiomyomas
Benign tumors of esophagus that are rare and slow-growing.
Light microscopy: consist of fasciles of spindle cells with variable amounts of fibrosis
Echinococcus granylosus
most common cause of hydatid cysts
occur in endemic areas in Middle East, southern South America, Iceland, Oceania
intial infection is assymptomatic
Liver is affected first, but can affect lung, muscle, or bone
cysts have “eggshell calcification” and are encapsulated that contain fluid and budding cells that will become daughter cells
** ASPIRATION is inadvisable**
