Pathologies/terminology Flashcards
Pneumothorax
Collapsed lung.
Air leaks into space between lung and chest wall
Pulmonary oedema
Excess fluid in lungs
Arrythmias
Irregular heart beat
Congenital heart disease
General term for range of birth defects that affect the heart.
Myocardial infaraction
Heart attack
Blood supply to heart blocked.
Coronary heart disease
Blood vessels supplying the heart are blocked or narrowed.
Pneumonia
Lung inflammation caused by bacterial or viral infection.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome
Lungs cannot provide vital organs with oxygen
Heart failure
Heart unable to pump blood around the body
Cardiovascular disease
General term for conditions affecting heart or blood vessels, usually associated with atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis
Build up of fatty deposits inside the arteries
Arterisclerosis
Thickening, hardening and loss of elasticity of artery walls.
Central venous pressure
Assessment of venous return, reflects pressure within right atrium.
Normal is 2-6 mm Hg
Intracranial pressure
Pressure exerted by fluids inside the skull and on brain tissue.
Normal is 5-15 mm Hg
Interstitial lung disease/pulmonary fibrosis
Scarring of interstitium (tissue surrounding air sacs, blood vessels and airways) which stiffens the lung tissue.
Peripheral artery disease
Narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to limbs
Pulmonary arterial hypertension
Hypertension in arteries of lungs
Pulmonary interstitial emphysema
Trapping of air in tissue outside of air sacs.
Emphysema
Damage to walls of air sacs in lungs.
Sudden cardiac death
Sudden unexpected death caused by loss of heart function
