Muscles of respiration Flashcards
Diaphragm
Main muscle of inspiration
Right hemi sits 2cm higher than left hemi
Superior surface covered with parietal pleura
Diaphragm innervation
Phrenic nerve (C3,4,5)
Intercostals
Pass between adjacent ribs
External intercostals- muscles of inspiration, elevate ribcage
Internal intercostals- muscles of expiration, depress ribcage
Innermost intercostals- stabilize chest wall
Intercostals innervation
Intercostal nerves (T1-11)
Accessory muscles of inspiration
Scalenes elevate ribcage
Sternocleidomastoid elevates ribcage
Pec major and minor- aid expansion of thoracic cavity
What is using accessory muscles a sign of?
Respiratory distress
Forced expiration muscles
Expiration brought about by relaxation of diaphragm and external intercostals
Forced expiration brought about by contraction of internal intercostals and abdominal muscles
What is use of abdominal muscles a sign of?
Respiratory distress
