2 classifications of pain
nociceptive: pain arising from activation of nociceptors following tissue damage (a-theta and c-fibre terminals), proportionate to injury, protective, enables healing with resolution of pain, physiological
neuropathic: pain arising from disease or damage to the nervous system, frequently long lasting, pain not proportional to tissue injury, pain serves no benefit, pathological
disease vs illness
disease: an objective biological event that involves disruptions of a specific body structure or organ systems caused by pathological, anatomical, or physiological
illness: a subjective experience or self-attribution that a disease is present; it yields physical discomfort, emotional distress, and psychosocial disruption ie illness refers to how sick the person perceives to be and responds to symptoms and disability
