Pathological Conditions of the Small Bowel Flashcards
Principles of Bowel Resection and
Anastomosis
. Affected bowel must be mobilized
. Pathological tissue is removed with a margin of healthy
tissue
. Adequate blood supply to remaining bowel must exist
. Relatively equal diameter segments of bowel must sewn
together
. Anastomosis should be tension free and leak-proof
. Mesenteric defect closed
. Functional anatomical continuity must be maintained
Meckels diverticulum: S/SX, DX & TX
Signs & Symptoms:
. Peptic ulceration
. Inflammation of ileal
mucosa
. Congenital umbilical fistula, iron deficiency anemia
. Malabsorption
. Neoplastic formation
. Impacted foreign body

. Sudden profuse and
painless hemorrhage in child

Treatment:
Medical
. Treat symptoms
. Manage complications
Surgical
. Treat obstruction,
perforation, abscess formation, bleeding
fistulas.
. Bowel resection if necessary
. Surgical intervention does not treat underlying Crohn’s Disease
