Pathogensis of parasitic disease Flashcards
What does pathogenesis refer to?
Pathogenesis of a disease refers to the mechanisms by which the disease exerts its affect within an individual animal
What does epidemiology refer to?
Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the spread of disease in populations
What are the main mechanisms of internal parasites, pathogenesis of gastrointestinal parasitic diseases? 4 thing
Reduction or loss of appetite
Blood loss leading to anaemia
Protein loss in the gut with or without diarrhoea
Immuno suppression
The magnitude of loss of appetite is influenced by what three things if we’re talking about anorexia?
Severity of infection
Development of immunity/stage of infection
Species of parasite
What are three signs of anaemia and briefly describe the disease?
Anaemia is an important clinical sign of infection with blood sucking parasites. Symptoms include pale mucus membranes, reduced PCV, loss of strength and breathlessness.
One of the most important mechanisms in prosthetic disease of the gut is increased loss of protein into the lumen. What are the three ways protein may be lost?
One. blood loss due to blood sucking parasites due to severe damage in the gut wall (coccidiosis)
2.loss of plasma into the gut lumen caused by inflammatory response of the gut to parasites
3.production of mucus and loss of mucosal cells
Immuno suppression is a feature of what infestation
Cattle infestation and man in pigs
HAEMONCHUS and TELADORSAGIA both live in the abomasum of sheep, contrast the which way they caused disease
Barbara Pole worm causes anorexia anaemia blood loss and protein loss
Brown stomach worm causes anorexia and protein loss and diarrhoea
What are the mechanisms that cattle tick causes?
Anaemia
Irritation
Disease association (the cattle is the intermediate host or vector for tick Fever)
Immuno suppression
Inappetence and anorexia
Direct damage to hides and skins
