Dog parasites Flashcards
They are four ways a dog parasite can cause damage to the host. What are they and briefly describe?
Mechanical damage caused by hookworm moving to a new feeding site and leaving the abandoned site damaged and bleeding or large numbers of tapeworms cause intestinal blockage. Another example is heartworm where it causes a blockage in the ventricle and seriously compromises cardiovascular function.
Depletive damage parasites cause nutrient loss from host leading to net loss of nutrients in the gut lumen and expelled in faeces mechanism by which tapeworms and roundworms induced damage
Toxic secretions these are caused by parasites such as paralysis tick
Allergenic host reactions to invading parasites fleas transmitting tapeworms
Endoparasites classified as nematodes (roundworms) include what five worms
Roundworm, hook worm, heartworm, whipworm, rat lung worm
Endoparasites classified as cestodes (tapeworms) include what to tapeworm
Flea tapeworm, Hydatid tapeworm
What is the difference between nematode and cestode hosts?
Nematode have a simple direct life cycle with no intermediate host and tapeworms have indirect lifecycles involving intermediate hosts
What are the common ectoparasites two categories and two examples per category?
Insects (dog fleas or common biting lice)
Arachnids (mites and ticks) demodec mite , sarcopid mite, ear mite , paralysis tick Brown dog tick
