pathogens Flashcards
what is a communicable disease?
a disease caused by a pathogen that can be passed from one person to another
what is a pathogen?
a microorganism that causes disease
what are the 4 types of pathogen?
-bacteria
-virus
-protist
-fungi
how do viruses cause disease?
they invade and reproduce inside living body cells leading to cell damage which makes you feel ill
how do bacteria cause disease?
divide rapidly by binary fission when inside the body, produce toxins that damage cells and tissues, making you feel ill
size of bacteria compared to body cells
1/100th
size of virus compared to bacteria
1/100th
are bacteria and viruses cells?
bacteria are, viruses aren’t
what are most protists?
single-celled eukaryotes
what are parasites?
things that live on or inside other organisms and cause them damage
how are parasites transferred to the organism?
by a vector
what is the body of some fungi made up of?
hyphae
how do hyphae cause disease?
they grow and penetrate skin and the surface of plants, can produce spores which can be spread
3 main ways pathogens can be spread
-water
-air
-direct contact
describe how pathogens can be spread in water + example
by drinking or bathing in dirty/contaminated water e.g cholera
