14
Q

What role does a virion play when causing disease?

A

They come in contact with a cell by attaching to landing sites on the surface.
The virus can either inject molecules into the cell or the cell swallows the virion (via phagocytosis)
Once inside, viral molecules (DNA or RNA) direct the cell to make virus offspring

16
Q

What are fungi?

A

A primitive, non-photosynthesising vegetable (technically a microbe)

17
Q

What role do fungi have in nature?

A

They feed on dead, decaying matter and break it down to return chemical elements to environment

18
Q

What types of fungi cause disease in humans?

A

Mycoses

19
Q

Provide examples of fungi.

A

Mushrooms, yeast, mold etc.

20
Q

What are protists?

A

Simple,primitive animals that are unicellular

21
Q

Where can protozoa be found?

A

In water and soil, this is how they spread

22
Q

Name a type of protozoa

A

Malaria

23
Q

What are the three types of protists

A

Intestinal (GIADIA)
Uro-genital (UTI)
Blood and tissue (MALARIA)

24
Q

What are worms?

A

Large, multicellular organisms that are either free-living or parasitic in nature

25
Q

How do worms enter the body?

A

Eggs are ingested in the body, worms can then hatch and live in the body. Some larvae can also burrow their way via the skin

26
Q

How do worms impact the body?

A

Causes malnourishment, or impacts the blood or liver

27
Q

What are prions?

A

A pathogen that causes neurodegenerative diseases in mammals, often a disease-causing form of a normal protein (misformed)

28
Q

Why are prions unique?

A

They have no nucleic acid, which makes them resistant to procedures that break down other pathogens (eg. HEAT)

29
Q

Give an example of a prion

A

Mad cow disease
