Cell Requirements & Metabolism Flashcards
What energy do all cells use?
Chemical energy
Where is chemical energy stored?
In the bonds between each atoms of every molecules.
What is a major energy source stored in a sugar molecule?
Glucose
Why do cells require energy?
Synthesis
Movement
Maintaining a stable environment
What is an autotroph?
Producer in food chain, manfacturers their own food via photosynthesis or chemosysnthesis
What autotrophs use light energy?
Photoautotrophs
What autotrophs use chemical energy?
Chemoautotrophs
What is a heterotroph?
Consumer in food chain, cannot produce own food. Must feed on other organism or organic matter
What does photosynthesis do?
Converts light energy to chemical energy (stores in bonds of sugar)
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplasts (using chlorophyll)
What factors influence rate of photosynthesis?
Temp
Light intensity
Carbon dioxide concentration
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6H20+6CO2=C6H12O6+6O2
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen + Water
What is cellular respiration?
The process where glucose molecules are broken down and energy is released from bonds
Why do we need energy?
Movement of substances
Reproduction
Synthesizing organic molecules from simple ones
Uptaking materials
