Pathogen Control Program Flashcards
Define refined and traditional quarantine methods.
Refined - Imports into the main facility only progeny from previously imported surface disinfected embryos that were reared to adults and spawned in the quarantine facility.
Traditional - Imports surface-disinfected embryos from adults housed and spawned within the quarantine facility.
How are chorionated embryos disinfected?
20-50 ppm bleach, buffered to pH 7.0
What is an example of a pathogen with vertical transmission that can circumvent quarantine procedures?
P. neurophilia
A sentinel surveillance program should use fish exposed to what type of water?
Pre- and post-filtration. Pre-filtration fish associated with dirty sumps, post-filtration fish on the same rack as colony fish.
How long should sentinel fish be placed for? Why?
At least 3 months to detect chronic infections like mycobacteria or P. neurophilia
