Nutrition Flashcards
What age of fish are typically fed live feeds? What are disadvantages of feeding live feed?
Larval and juvenile fish. Live diets are variable in nutritional profile, potential source of pathogens, and challenging to produce in quantities to support beyond the juvenile stage.
What are advantages of feeding formulated, processed feeds?
Enhanced growth and reproduction from the sub-adult stage on and greater level of control over quantity, quality, and source of ingredients
What dietary component has a sig effect on growth and reproduction? ZF display a higher demand for what fatty acid than do most species of cultured coldwater fish? Why is this important?
n6:n3 fatty acids. n6 fatty acids. Most commercially available fish feeds are formulated for coldwater species that require a high ratio of n3 fatty acids.
Fish should not be fed more than they can consume in what time period?
3-5 minutes.
Generally, how does feeding correlate with age? How often are mature, adult fish feed daily? What percent of their body weight daily?
Number of feedings per day decreases as fish age increases. Mature fish fed 1 to 3 times daily to reach a total consumption of 3-5% of body weight per day.
When should rotifers and Artemia be provided to fish?
Rotifers fed out when their gut is loaded with algae or whatever they are enriched with. Artemia collected and presented as close to hatching to ensure maximal value to fish.
Why should dry, formulated feeds not be mixed with water prior to delivery?
Water-soluble vitamins and minerals rapidly leach from these diets once hydrated.
What are general recommendations for storage of fish food?
Dry, cool environments, avoiding long-term storage of formulated feeds.
