alternating smooth & jerky eye movenments, if pathological, usually caused by problem with vestibular system
myopic eye
near sighted, rays of light are brought to a focus in front of the retina
hyperopic eye
far sighted, rays of light come to a focus behind the retina
simple myopic astigmatism
vertical bundle of rays is focused on the retina while the horizontal bundle of rays are focused in front of the retina
cataracts
crystalline lens with opacification = clouding of the lens, common in diabetes mellitus
glaucoma
extra pressure in the anterior chamber -> damages optic nerve
macula degeneration
degeneration of macula - causes central blindness
diabetic retinopathy
increased vascular permeability and angiogenesis destroys retina
river blindness
parasitic worms, leading cause worldwide, not in the us though
Hemidecussation
Rearrangement of the divers of the optic nerves occurring in the optic chiasma in which about half of them cross over to the contra lateral side
Bilateral hemianopia
Optic chiasm lesion =lateral vision impaired
