French and Indian War
The first three wars between England and France focused mainly on battles in France, but the fourth and final war started in the colonies. Then England and France started to realize the importance of their colonies.
Proclamation of 1763
Prohibited colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. Defying the prohibition, thousands streamed westward beyond the imaginary boundary line.
Stamp Act
Required that revenue stamps be placed on most printed paper in the colonies, including all legal documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and ads.
Townsend Acts
Required that the revenues raised be used to pay crown officials in all cases whatsoever.
Boston Massacre
A crowd of colonists harassed the guards and they shot into the crowd and killed 5 people.
Tea Act
Made the price of the company’s tea cheaper than the smuggled Dutch Tea, even with tax included.
Intolerable Acts
- Boston Port Bill - The port of Boston closed which prohibited trade.
- Quebec Act - Organized the Canadian lands gained from France.
- Administration of Justice Act - Allowed royal officials accused of crimes to be tried in England instead of the colonies.
- Mass. Bay Regulating Act - Reduced the power of the Mass. legislature.
- New Quartering Act, 1775 - Enabled British troops to be quartered in private homes.
1st Continental Congress
A meeting of the delegates from 12/13 colonies that met at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania early in the Revolution.
Stamp Act Congress
Gathered in New York, 27 delegated from 9 colonies. They asked the King and Parliament to repeal the offensive legislation. This was the beginning of intercolonial unity.
Boston Tea Party
On December 16, 1773 a bunch of Bostonians dressed as Indians boarded the ships and dumped the tea into the harbor.
Battle of Lexington and Concord
These battles initiated the Revolutionary War between the British and the colonists. Thomas Gage sent British troops to stop the colonists. On April 19,1775 the first shots were fired, starting the war.
2nd Continental Congress
Representatives from each of the colonies met in Philadelphia to start an official government and build an army and navy.
