Describe the pathogenesis of ischaemic stroke?
- Narrowing of blood vessels causes reduced blood flow to an area of the brain
- Central area of necrosis surrounded by a penumbra which may be salvageable if blood supply is restored
- Ischaemic cascade leads to inflammation and oedema
- Leads to activation of destructive enzymes
